Insider voice memo 3: My Visit To George Floyd Square

A War Memorial, Peace Vigil, Community Garden, And More
2

This past Monday, July 5 I was in Minneapolis-St. Paul visiting family. I decided to make a trip to 38th and Chicago where Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd, and where thousands of people reclaimed that public space to defend Black lives, reimagine public safety, mourn, and celebrate.

I didn’t know when I would next get the chance to visit this sacred space.

As I moved around the area, I turned on my voice memo recorder to capture my thoughts and feelings. I also captured photos and saved them to this Instagram highlight.

Have you been? If so what was your experience?

We're Having a Moment
It's true. We all feel it in the United States. We are having some kind of moment. Where it goes, we can't say, but right here, right now, something significant is happening involving race and in particular, policing. In this limited run series, Baratunde Thurston explains and explores what feels like a defining moment in American history. When Mitt Romney joins a Black Lives Matter march, when NASCAR bans the Confederate flag, when major cities actually contemplate defunding the police, and when Adidas retweets Nike in support of Black lives, something big is going on.
