I saw Sinners twice. So should you

This movie encodes messages the authoritarians want to ban

I literally just got off the air on MSNBC’s Weekend Primetime show and got to talk about Ryan Coogler’s brilliant blues opera, Sinners. Yes, I said blues opera. This thing is so much more than a horror movie, bending that genre to explore history, spirituality, and our interconnectedness in beautiful (and occasionally hilarious) ways.

Coogler has been humanizing Black people since his feature debut, Fruitvale Station. I didn’t get to discuss the parallels I see in Sinners but they are present and include the same actor, Michael B. Jordan and similar uses of time in the story.

I’ve got two threads going in the Speak Easy chat if you want to add to them or see what people are loving about the movie. There are spoilers FYI.

What I said on MSNBC is all spoiler-free and the hosts of the show also kept it free of spoilers. Thanks Ayman Mohyeldin, Elise Jordan, Antonia Hylton, and Catherine Rampell.

Oh, and MSNBC was wrong to do Joy Reid like they did. Feel like I need to say that because she was and still is doing great work.

Now if you’d like me to host a live here on Substack to talk openly and with spoilers about all the things I loved about this film, let me know in the comments and I’ll try to get something on the books. I think this movie is that important.
